I appreciate your little monograph about guns. I would add that, aside from the 1994 designation by the government in determining what was or was not an assault weapon, this is also made abundantly clear in gun magazines of the period as the “survivalist” movement began. There is little doubt how these weapons, designed after military weapons earned their name “assault,” which appears to be what gun manufacturers or publishers and advertisers began calling them to help attract consumers. The “modern sporting rifle” is the re-branding attempt by gun manufacturers to try to make what are essentially weapons for mass killing sound more socially acceptable. I appreciate your blog and read it when I can.
